# Add trend line to histogram

Can I add a trend-line to a histogram?

By Amber March 4, 0 Comment Whoopee!! In ExcelMicrosoft added the ability to create histograms and box plots as easily as other types of charts although unfortunately horizontal box plots are not an option.

No more calculating frequencies and hacking the bar chart feature! Students familiar with Excel are quick to pick-up how to make a specific chart.

However, from experience, the main problem students encounter is conceptual and can be summarised by the question, which plot is most appropriate for my data and purpose? To answer this requires a deep understanding of what each type of plot represents, as well as an understanding of the purpose of the analysis.

The following diagram may be helpful: Diagram showing some of the decisions to be made when choosing a graphical display. Beyond this they need to consider the characteristics of the data.

A couple of points: If using a flow chart like that above with your students I would recommend working through the rationale for the chart structure together. It may even provoke healthy debate!

Even better, have students work in groups to first construct their own flow-charts, and then discuss as a class to obtain a final version. If a variable is numeric but only has a few different values, it may be better treated as ordered discrete when choosing a plot. A trend line is used for multivariate data showing add trend line to histogram relationship between two variables ; a histogram is used for univariate data distribution of one variable.
